Understanding the differences between different anti-static and static shielding bags can help you decide which is most appropriate for your uses. 'Pink' Poly bags prevent static charge build-up by dissipating static charge to ground. This keeps the bag (and its contents) from building up a static charge that can be passed to other objects. However, they lack the "shielding" capability of ESD bags. A strong static field or discharge from outside such bags can reach the items stored in them, causing damage. As such, pink poly bags are best used to store non-static sensitive components that may later come into contact with static sensitive components. For protection of sensitive components, static shielding bags are most appropriate. The "silver" static bags that are common to computer components can dissipate charge just like poly bags, but their metal structure allows them to stop static fields or discharges from reaching sensitive components stored in the bags. As a general rule, poly bags can stop about 10% of an external charge or field and static shielding bags can stop approximately 97% of the same charge (1000 volt charge).
